Detailed Overview of API 6D Check Valve Structural Types and Application Scenarios

API 6D check valves are primarily categorized into three types based on their structural design: swing-type, lift-type, and dual-plate (wafer) type; each offers unique application scenarios and technical advantages.


Swing-type API 6D check valves feature an internal rocker-arm swing mechanism in which a disc-shaped valve flap rotates around an axis positioned outside the seat opening. The internal flow path is streamlined, resulting in low flow resistance, making them particularly suitable for large-bore applications characterized by low flow velocities and infrequent flow fluctuations. These valves are ideal for water systems, oil pipelines, and HVAC systems, effectively preventing backflow and water hammer. The swing-type design is typically selected for pipelines with a nominal diameter of 350 mm or less.


Lift-type API 6D check valves feature a disc that moves linearly along the central axis of the valve seat; while they offer superior sealing performance compared to swing-type valves, they have a relatively higher flow resistance coefficient. Widely used in branch pipelines with diameters of 150 mm or less—and especially in vertical water piping systems—these valves offer quiet operation and a simple structural design.


Dual-plate API 6D check valves utilize a design with two symmetrically arranged valve plates. The plates open during forward flow and close rapidly upon flow reversal, driven by a combination of fluid pressure and spring force. Characterized by a short face-to-face dimension and lightweight construction, they are easy to install and maintain, and are suitable for both horizontal and vertical pipeline installations.


In terms of application, API 6D check valves are widely used in high-pressure, large-bore, or safety-critical pipelines across industries such as oil and gas, refining, chemicals, and power generation. They handle a variety of media, including water, petroleum products, steam, and corrosive fluids. They are also employed in supply lines that replenish auxiliary systems where pressure might otherwise exceed that of the main system. Thanks to their diverse structural configurations and broad applicability, API 6D check valves have become indispensable fluid control components in modern industrial piping systems.
